9 ForKids students participated in the first Bioelectric Summer Institute at the ODU Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics. Students conducted research along with Professors and Teaching Assistants investigating heart treatments and manufacturing a biosensor for lactic acid. Field trips were also part of the program as well as a closing ceremony where each group presented their motivation, research, conclusions and answered questions about their projects.
More than one students asked if they will be able to attend next summer and all other summers until they go to college!
Other comments we overheard after the final presentation included:
"I want to be a doctor so this experience really helps me."
"I did not think I would be able to speak in front of a group but I learned a lot this week and really understood what we were researching so it was not as hard as I thought."
"I was nervous because I did not know the people but I have made new friends and exchanged contact numbers so we can keep in touch."
ForKids is grateful to Dr. Slaughter, Director of the Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics, for making it possible for our ForKids kids to attend and broaden their horizons.
